A description of the Titanic's one voyage needs no embellishment to sound like folklore; here's a version of the story for younger readers. Though the author doesn't mention or quote specific individuals who were involved in the disaster, she writes in the present tense to give the narrative immediacy; and her selection of detail will leave a strong impression of the night's confusion and many acts of courage. In a final chapter, she describes Robert Ballard's 1985 discovery of the Titanic's wreck and his exploratory visit a year later. Bright but sometimes indistinct watercolors illustrate the story so thoroughly that even younger readers will be able to follow it. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

Gr. 2^-4. Although this is a Step into Reading Book (Step 3), the compelling story and drawings not only will draw browsers but also make the book an appropriate read-aloud choice for kindergarten through grade six. The visual comparison of the ship's size relative to four city blocks and the cutaway look at the six levels, including the swimming pool, add interest as well as information.
