McEwen (Sniper Elite: One-Way Trip) is back with another fast-paced military thriller. When Chechen terrorists team up with Al-Qaeda to sneak nuclear suitcase bombs into America, successfully detonate one, and hide another to extort the West, the President assembles his best, and most deniable, resource: a CIA "SEAL Team Black." Led by former SEAL sniper Gil Shannon, this group of former SEALs and Delta Force members who were kicked out of the military for having the audacity to rescue an American POW try to prevent the bomb from destroying an American city. The action is satisfactory, especially the attack on the Montana ranch. Verdict This work is recommended to listeners who enjoy military thrillers.-Scott R. At the start of bestseller McEwen and Koloniar's riveting sequel to 2013's Sniper Elite: One-Way Trip, members of the Riyad us-Saliheyn Martyrs' Brigade are smuggling a Russian RA-115 "suitcase" nuke through a tunnel underneath the border between Mexico and the U.S. The mission doesn't go as planned, and the American government learns that another RA-115 is already somewhere within the country. The CIA turns for help to Navy SEAL Gil Shannon, recently pulled out of retirement by Bob Pope, the loose-cannon director of the CIA's Special Activities Division, to track down two terrorists involved in the real-life attack on the American mission in Benghazi in 2012 that killed two SEALs. To locate the second nuke, Shannon puts together his old unit, SEAL Team Six Black, filled with the usual colorful characters. Meanwhile, various weenie government officials are quaking in their boots. A deadly terrorist attack on Gil's wife and her mother on their ranch in Montana is as good as any fictional battle scene in recent memory. Readers will want to see a lot more of SEAL Team Black. A suitcase nuclear weapon goes off in a tunnel between the U.S. and Mexican border, and chaos ensues in this latest Sniper Elite novel. Civil unrest and panic hit the streets, and the president feels he has no other choice but to recall back into service an elite unit he had disbanded. Gil Shannon and his team of misfits don't have much time before a second device is set to go off. Can Shannon find his men and get them back into shape quickly so they can learn where the bomb is hidden and stop it in time? The authenticity of how the elite military operate while struggling with the political landscape of a democratic government propels the story. Shannon and his men seem like real people, warts and all. One hopes that this story will remain fiction. Fans of military thrillers should definitely give this title a shot.--Ayers, Jeff Copyright 2010 Booklist
